Vacuum casting is now frequently used by many companies for prototypes, and the process may look complicated but it’s really not. Here we introduce the 5 main steps that how vacuum casting works below.
Step 1. Generation of master model
The casting model is made through stereolithography or CNC machining, which depends on cost and part using purpose. The master model has to be perfect, as any flaws will be transferred to the final casting product.
Step 2. Ingate and air exhaust design of mold
Ingate and air exhaust design are very important for silicone mold, because any unreasonable or unscientific design will result in part misrun or bubble defects. Thanks to the soft mold material---silicone, we can add other Ingate and air exhaust when find this problem, and then correct easily, which makes vacuum casting process more flexible to cast good parts.
Step 3. Mold curing process
This process is not complicated---mixing liquid silicone material and curing agent, and then pour into mold frame. Then we need to put it in the oven to solidify.
Once the mold is cured, it will be cut in the middle and master model is taken out. It leaves a hollow cavity for injection
Step 4. Resin casting by vacuum casting machine
When the mold is placed inside vacuum chamber of casting machine, the casting resin will flow straight into the mold cavity and fills it. In this step, we have different casting resin material options to produce parts with required properties. Also, casting resin can mixed with coloring pigment or metallic powder to fulfill aesthetics and functional requirements.
Step 5. Casting part curing process
Conclusion
Vacuum casting solution is an economical way for low volume manufacturing comparing with other mold technologies, because it is faster and silicone mold is also cheaper, but can repeat part easily, with good dimensions and surface finish.
